MovieFan reviewed The Dark Knight (2008)
The Dark Knight
The sequel to Christopher Nolan's 2005 Batman Begins is an absolute stunner! From the opening credits I was fixed on this masterpiece which is no doubt in my opinion the best Batman movie ever made. Christian Bale was brilliant as Batman and the rest of the casting was spot on, but the talking point of this movie is the role of Joker played by the late Heath Ledger. I cannot describe the performance by Ledger which will go down as one of the best villain roles in movie history.
A great ...
MovieFan reviewed The Shepherd: Border Patrol (2008)
The Shepherd: Border Patrol
For years I've been waiting for Jean Claude Van Damme to be casted in a movie that was actually a decent watch! The Shepherd: Border Patrol is no exception.
The story failed to keep me entertained and the acting is very 'B-Grade'. I have to admit that Van Damme can still kick some serious butt!
MovieFan reviewed Saw IV (2007)
Saw IV
Now, I'm a fan of the Saw franchise but Saw IV unfortunately was nowhere as smart, original or entertaining than the original. I thought they wrapped things up in Saw 3, obviously not since word is that Saw 5 is on the way! Just like Halloween and Nightmare On Elm Street, the story had finished a long time ago but the potential cash flow is a big attraction. Anyway, Saw IV has some coolgruesome bits but the ending, in my opinion was a bit of a let down.
MovieFan reviewed Blonde Ambition (2007)
Blonde Ambition
A remake of the 1988 movie Working Girl, Blonde Ambition stars Jessica Simpson as Katie, a young woman who becomes the unwitting pawn of two ruthless business executives in their bid to usurp and replace the head of an international conglomerate.
Blonde Ambition lacked a decent storyline and honestly, if it wasn't for Jessica Simpson, I would probably have fallen asleep in the first 40 minutes or so.
Simpson has great acting talent potential but unfortunately we are still yet to see her best.
MovieFan reviewed Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007)
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium was by far a lot better than I had expected. A fun family movie which amused my children for the entire screen time. Dustin Hoffman is great as always and Natalie Portman gives great support. Grab the popcorn kids, you're in for a magic ride!
MovieFan reviewed Michael Moore Hates America (2004)
Michael Moore Hates America
I think Michael Moore Hates America is the incorrect title for this film. The correct title is simply Michael Wilson Hates Michael Moore. Being a long time fan of Michael Moore, it was good to see the other side of the story. Unfortunately it was more of airing a grudge on one person than backing up facts of the so-called 'lies' in every movie made by Mr Moore. Good for Michael Wilson for giving the movie your best shot, but unfortunately for Mr Wilson, Michael Moore he will never be.
MovieFan reviewed Hatchet (2006)
Hatchet
If you are a fan of Old School American Horror, which funnily enough is the slogan for this film, then you will most definitely enjoy Hatchet. Writer/Director Adam Green is obviously a fan of the 'slasher flick'. Hatchet didn't live up to my expectations I had. Fell way short of excitement actually. Not highly recommended.
MovieFan reviewed Suburban Girl (2007)
Suburban Girl
Suburban Girl doesn't do any good for Sarah Michelle Gellar's career unfortunately.
Absolutely no chemistry between Gellar and Alec Baldwin and the story didn't interest me too much either. Don't beat yourself up too much if you miss watching this film.
MovieFan reviewed Pistol Whipped (2008)
Pistol Whipped
Whether you like Steven Seagal or not, you have to admit that every movie he makes he kicks some serious butt and makes it look so easy!!
The action in this film is classic Seagal and I guess it is really no different to any of the other direct to DVD titles with Steven Seagal's name attached.
The film has a pretty good car chase scene and a decent storyline. If you're a fan of Seagal then you'll like this movie but if you are not a fan then I think you ...
MovieFan reviewed 3:10 to Yuma (2007)
3:10 to Yuma
3:10 To Yuma is a remake of the 1957 western of the same name. Now I'm not a fan of the western genre, but with a cast of both Russell Crowe and Christian Bale this definitely appealed to me. A great story accompanied by fine acting, 3:10 To Yuma may well be in my opinion one of the greatest westerns of all time. I just can't find anything bad to say about this movie.
MovieFan reviewed Halloween (2007)
Halloween
On June 2006 it was announced that Rob Zombie would write, produce and direct a remake of John Carpenter's original Halloween. After sitting through the first half hour I was quietly surprised. The story didn't seem to drag on too long and thankfully it wasn't as bad as any of Rob Zombie's previous work.
I'm not too keen on remakes of movies, especially a 29 year old classic. Halloween is definitely watchable. This coming from ...
MovieFan reviewed Cleaner (2007)
Cleaner
I've been rather critical in the past towards director Rennie Harlin's movies, but as it turns out Cleaner is an easy enjoyable watch. A decent story and the very good acting as usual from Samuel L. Jackson and Ed Harris makes the movie worthwhile.
Not the best thriller available, but one to take time out to watch.
MovieFan reviewed Southland Tales (2007)
Southland Tales
Southland Tales proves that a great cast doesn't necessarily mean a great movie!
I guess I expected much more from Richard Kelly who wrote and directed the fabulous Donnie Darko. Very weird film and 2 hours and 24 minutes is way too long for my liking.
MovieFan reviewed Hostel: Part II (2007)
Hostel: Part II
If you have seen the original Hostel then you will probably agree that it was a pretty decent effort. Unfortunately I can't seem to say the same for
Hostel: Part II.
The film picks up from where the last ended and seems to go nowhere from there. Stay tuned for a brutal ending guys!
MovieFan reviewed P.S. I Love You (2007)
P.S. I Love You
A very well thought, well acted and directed movie. Once I caught on to what the movie was all about, it didn't really seem like I had just sat through a 126 minute movie. Gerard Butler was great, certainly a different role than King Leonidas, and Hillary Swank is at her brilliant best. Fun, entertaining, good watch. By the way make sure you have those tissues ready!
MovieFan reviewed Vantage Point (2008)
Vantage Point
Pete Travis take a bow. What a way to start off your feature film debut. I love the way this story was told. Great choice of actors, good thrills and a very good car chase too! Vantage Point is well worth a watch.
MovieFan reviewed Bug (2007)
Bug
At first It's kinda hard to explain what Bug is really about. It's one of those movies that you will either get or not get! After a second screening, I got. Very well acted movie, good direction. Bug will definitely make you scratch your head a few times.
MovieFan reviewed Half Nelson (2006)
Half Nelson
I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed watching Half Nelson. Ryan Gosling gives a very good performance and the movie was directed well by Ryan Fleck. My only criticism would be that I found the film a little slow half way through, but by the end of the movie I was satisfied that Half Nelson is a good quality film.
MovieFan reviewed The Heartbreak Kid (2007)
The Heartbreak Kid
A remake of the 1972 movie of the same name, Peter and Bobby Farrelly provide great direction as always. Some genuinely funny moments throughout the movie had me chuckling with laughter.
I didn't think this was as funny as There's Something About Mary, but could well be the directors best work since. If you are a fan of Ben Stiller and the Farrelly Brothers, then The Heartbreak Kid is sure to please. Well worth a watch. A warning though: Not intended for kids :-)
MovieFan reviewed Planet Terror (2007)
Planet Terror
Planet Terror is no doubt a Cult movie followers dream. Brilliantly written, acted and directed. Loved everything about this film and although I am a fan of Quentin Tarantino, Planet Terror was far more entertaining for me than Death Proof. Definitely a movie you have to see on the big screen. A very highly entertaining Zombie gore-fest. Kudos to Writer/Director Robert Rodriguez.
MovieFan reviewed 27 Dresses (2008)
27 Dresses
Written by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) and directed by Anne Fletcher (Step Up), 27 Dresses, although predictable, wasn't as bad as what I had previously heard. A nice 'heart warming' love story, great cast with very good direction, this movie will obviously appeal to fans of the Romantic Comedy genre.
I have to say that the highlight of the movie for me, apart from admiring the sight of Katherine Heigl, was a drunken rendition of Elton John's Bennie and the Jets....hilarious :-)
MovieFan reviewed Death Proof (2007)
Death Proof
Death Proof is yet another offering from the legendary Quentin Tarantino. If you are a fan of movies like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction then this is for you. A bit too much dialogue for my liking in this movie. The last 30 minutes or so was very well directed seeing Tarantino throw his name in with the best directors when it comes to controlling car chase scenes. Take special note of New Zealand stunt woman Zoe Bell 'doing her thing'. Very well acted and directed.
MovieFan reviewed Breach (2007)
Breach
Shattered Glass Director Billy Ray, tells the true story of the greatest security breach in U.S. intelligence history. The movie in some parts were a little slow, but by the end of the movie, turned out to be a pretty good watch. Well casted and acted, Breach is one of those cat and mouse like thrillers. Chris Cooper is at his always brilliant best.
MovieFan reviewed Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Pan's Labyrinth
Two words describe Pan's Labyrinth: Absolute Masterpiece. This film delivers a fantastic cast and Writer/Director Guillermo Del Torro is simply a genius. Pan's Labyrinth appealed to me both for the visual effects and the story. Well worth the 3 Academy Awards that it won. This movie is filmed in Spanish so if you are not a fan of subtitles this may not be a movie for you, but I would recommend that you give this one a look.
MovieFan reviewed Pulp Fiction (1994)
Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction is an absolute masterpiece from Writer/Director Quentin Tarantino. With the support of such a great cast including Samuel L Jackson, John Travolta and Uma Thurman, the movie won award after award faster than you can say 'Royale with cheese'. I found the film very entertaining, and the acting is brilliant. Admittedly I was a little confused watching Pulp Fiction the first time, but watching a second time, made understanding the story a lot easier. Great cult film making at it's very best.
MovieFan reviewed Wild Hogs (2007)
Wild Hogs
I enjoyed watching Wild Hogs a lot more than I thought I would. A very good cast and good direction certainly helped this movie from becoming a 'flop'. Offers a few 'dialogue laughs' and some either funnier scenes. Kept me entertained throughout the movie. Wild Hogs did very well in the U.S. Cinemas making over $40 million on the first weekend which is always a good sign. My advice: check it out, you may be surprised :-)
MovieFan reviewed Surf's Up (2007)
Surf's Up
Surf's Up is a nice fun family movie with great animation and a decent story. If you enjoyed films like Finding Nemo and Happy Feet then you are sure to enjoy Surf's Up. Not as good as Nemo and Feet but worthy of a watch.
MovieFan reviewed Black Snake Moan (2006)
Black Snake Moan
Black Snake Moan brings together three actors at different times in their careers. Justin Timberlake, Chrisina Ricci and Samuel L. Jackson. Timberlake just starting his, Ricci who gets better with each performance and Jackson the seasoned pro. The movie has a weird story but it's the great acting, especially by Ricci and Jackson which would almost be their best performances to date. Writer/Director Craig Brewer, following up from Hustle & Flow, holds the movie together nicely. Mixed reviews on this one. I thought it was brilliant. A must see.
MovieFan reviewed 300 (2007)

2 hours of superb cinematography, great acting and a brilliant story which will no doubt impress anyone who watches this film. Gerard Butler impressed me in the lead role of King Leonidas. A great pleasure to watch. Wonderful film making by Director Zack Snyder. Absolutely stunning.
MovieFan reviewed Southern Belles (2005)
Southern Belles
If you are a fan of a goofy comedy straight out of the trailer park, then you're gonna love Southern Belles! Anna Farris and Laura Breckenridge were a laugh. Not a bad effort for a low budget comedy. I guess you're either gonna love it or hate it!
MovieFan reviewed Evan Almighty (2007)
Evan Almighty
Costing $175 million to make, Evan Almighty is the most expensive comedy ever made. Unfortunately seemed to be a complete waste of time. I believe Steve Carell is one of the funniest men in showbiz, but the movie didn't do him any justice. It's best not to expect a reprise of the successful Bruce Almighty because you will be disappointed.
MovieFan reviewed Perfect Stranger (2007)
Perfect Stranger
I thought I would have enjoyed Perfect Stranger a lot more than I actually did. Although I can say it is watchable and has a nice little twist to it, I do think that if the movie didn't have the names Halle Berry and Bruce Willis attached to it, then it may well have been on the fast track in being a direct to dvd title. Giovanni Ribisi supported well, James Foley's direction was fair, but it lacked a bit of "oompf" if you get what I mean :-)
MovieFan reviewed The Simpsons Movie (2007)
The Simpsons Movie
I think once you've seen The Simpsons on TV you can pretty much expect much of the same on the big screen. The movie is actually pretty funny. Good to hear all the regular longtime 'voice' cast. Fans of the TV Series will not be disappointed.
MovieFan reviewed American Pie Presents: Beta House (2007)
American Pie Presents: Beta House
American Pie Presents: Beta House keeps the 'Pie' franchise moving. Although no where near as good as the first couple of movies, but just like the last few American Pie releases, Beta house still managed to keep me laughing. I think you'll like this movie if you are a fan of American Pie or just like movies that show a lot of 'rudie bits!'
MovieFan reviewed Transformers (2007)
Transformers
Having Michael Bay at the helm of Transformers was always going to be a good thing. Apparently he did everything right according to the hardcore Transformer fans. I'd have to agree. I have never really been into all the Transformers hype when I was a kid but I was highly entertained in this movie from the beginning. Shia LaBeouf carried the lead role very well and since his great performance in Disturbia, I can see that this guy can only get better. The battles between the Autobots and Decepticons are absolutely ...
MovieFan reviewed Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)
Resident Evil: Extinction
Don't you think it's so cool watching Milla Jovovich blow the crap out of a whole heap of zombies? That's about all I liked about this movie unfortunately :-(
If you didn't like the previous two Resident Evil movies, then you aren't missing too much here.
MovieFan reviewed The Condemned (2007)
The Condemned
WWE Superstar 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin does a great job in this film. Unfortunately the critics jumped all over this movie as you would expect. Watching this movie was like watching scenes from both The Running Man and Predator. Good action at times with a few laughs thrown in. Great support given by Vinnie Jones!
MovieFan reviewed Daddy Day Camp (2007)
Daddy Day Camp
Daddy Day Camp is definitely a movie that targets 8-year olds, and by sitting through the entire movie made me wonder why a sequel was ever made. I don't even think Eddie Murphy and Jeff Garlin of Daddy Day Care could have helped how poor this movie really is.
MovieFan reviewed Infamous (2006)
Infamous
It's a shame that Infamous was released a year after Capote, which saw Phillip Seymour Hoffman earn a well deserved Academy Award for Best Actor. Infamous seemed to pick up on a few facts that Capote left behind. In all honesty, Toby Jones' portrayal as Truman Capote, in my opinion was by far better than Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Capote. Although a little slow in parts of the movie, Infamous, despite similarities to Capote, was well worth the time.
MovieFan reviewed Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield (2007)
Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield
Even with some decent acting at times, Ed Gein: The Butcher Of Plainfield unfortunately doesn't quite live up to the famous name. Having read up and watched a lot of footage over the years of Ed Gein, this movie seems to be a little far from the truth in all honesty. Other than that, parts of the film are very gruesome which I know a lot of you like. Not the first movie about the sick life of Ed Gein nor is it one of the best. Kane Hodder does a ...
MovieFan reviewed The Kingdom (2007)
The Kingdom
After seeing the theatrical trailer for The Kingdom I knew this was one movie that I was anxiously wanting to see. But in saying that, also asking myself do we really need another war on terror/U.S. vs middle east film. However I am pleased to say that actor-turned-director Peter Berg does a great job telling the story in this film. Jamie Foxx was once again brilliant and supported well by a great cast which includes Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper and Jason Bateman. By the end of the film, The Kingdom turned ...
MovieFan reviewed The Tattooist (2007)
The Tattooist
A lot of hype has been built up for the release of The Tattooist. Unfortunately for me, the movie failed to excite me in any way. Jason Behr was excellent in the lead role and it was great to see some familiar surroundings in the movie, having myself lived in South Auckland all of my life.
The movie was researched well and at times was followed up by some rather good acting.
MovieFan reviewed Hairspray (2007)
Hairspray
Not being too much of a fan of the 'musical stage show turned movie' genre, I was quietly surprised by Hairspray. I thought first time actress Nicole Blonsky was brilliant, as was most of the cast actually, but the stand out performer for me was the always brilliant John Travolta! Full marks for the films Choreography and Set Design.
MovieFan reviewed Rise: Blood Hunter (2007)
Rise: Blood Hunter
If you really wanted to see a good Vampire/Horror movie then unfortunately Rise: Blood Hunter is sure to disappoint. Seems to me to be a bad rip off of the Blade movies! I actually had expected a far better storyline from writer/director Sebastian Gutierrez, who wrote Gothika and Snakes On A Plane. The blood and gore in the film will appeal to those with that obsession. Couple of good cameos, the best involving Nick Lachey!!
MovieFan reviewed State's Evidence (2004)
State's Evidence
Any movie featuring teen suicide is always going to be disturbing. Just the thought of writing a script around the subject makes me wonder why. State's Evidence touches on all matters including depression, mass murder and rape. Director Benjamin Louis and Writer Mark Brown have pushed the boundaries of movie making, in my opinion. Did we really need this movie on the shelf? Shades of Columbine High School shooting over again. Content will most definitely disturb. You'll have to make up your own mind.
MovieFan reviewed Perfect Creature (2007)
Perfect Creature
Set in New Zealand in the 1960's, Perfect Creature is basically a new take on the Vampire tale. Not having too much time in the past for Vampire Movies, I actually enjoyed what Writer / Director GlennStandring had to offer. Also the fact that the movie was shot here in New Zealand and seeing a few familiar faces helped. Definitely one of the better movies coming out of New Zealand at the moment.
MovieFan reviewed The Ferryman (2007)
The Ferryman
The Ferryman is a far from perfect Horror flick, but being New Zealand made with a decent cast, it's worth a watch. I have never been a fan of the whole body jumping thing in movies, don't really see the point, and there is a lot of it here. I lost a bit of interest in the story about half way through. Not highly recommended unfortunately.
MovieFan reviewed Seraphim Falls (2007)
Seraphim Falls
Although a little slow-paced, to be fair Seraphim Falls was a decent watch. Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson are at their best and the cinematography by Academy Award winner John Toll is superb. Not too sure what the point of Angelica Houstons character was, appearing out of nowhere in the desert. The last 15 minutes or so seemed to move too far away from the story, but in the end, a good 'big screen' debut from Director David VonAncken.
MovieFan reviewed Bratz (2007)
Bratz
After sitting through Bratz: The Movie with my children, as expected, they got more enjoyment out of the movie than I did. Actually I thought the whole idea of a big screen live action version was sad news. Too 'bubble-gum' for me. Although it is targeted at 8 year-olds isn't it?
MovieFan reviewed Animal 2 (2007)
Animal 2
Some very good acting in this movie, especially from lead Ving Rhames. The story carried on from the first movie which helps make the follow-up a success. I would like to have seen Terrence Howard reprise his role as Animal's son, somehow it kind of throws me off the story a bit with a different actor playing an already established character. To sum it all up, good story, great acting, well worth a watch.
MovieFan reviewed Superbad (2007)
Superbad
From the team that brought us The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, Superbad will have you in stitches from the start. For me, Superbad was very crude, very rude but most of all very funny!
Sometimes a little over the top, but definitely worth a watch. I guess you can describe this movie as being disgustingly funny. A warning though: Not intended for kids :-)
MovieFan reviewed Juno (2007)
Juno
Jason Reitman, Diablo Cody and Ellen Page take a bow. Juno is by far one of the best movies of the year. I said after watching Hard Candy, that Ellen Page was an actress that one day will most definitely win an Oscar should the right role come along, and until now, I had never heard of writer Diablo Cody. Well ladies, you'd better start writing those acceptance speeches. Nominated for 4 Academy Awards which includes Best Director Nominee Jason Reitman, Juno is a must see for all movie fans. Plenty ...
MovieFan reviewed National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007)
National Treasure: Book of Secrets
After being completely surprised by National Treasure, which turned out to be better than I originally thought, National Treasure: Book Of Secrets is actually a pretty decent sequel. Although, I think that if you didn't like the first, then you may not be too fussed in watching the second. A good movie to keep the family amused.
MovieFan reviewed The Brave One (2007)
The Brave One
Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard deliver great performances and Neil Jordan does a great job directing. There seemed to be something missing from the story that I can't quite figure out. I think a different ending may have made the movie a lot more applaudable. An obvious remake of the 1974 movie Death Wish starring Charles Bronson. Once again, great performances by Foster and Howard. Well worth a watch.
MovieFan reviewed Sicko (2007)
Sicko
Whatever you think about Michael Moore or his movies, it's almost impossible to disagree with the current argument of health care in the United States. As of all Moore's movies, SiCKO is very well researched, written & directed. An eye opening, jaw dropping Michael Moore classic. No doubt one of his best movies to date.
MovieFan reviewed I Think I Love My Wife (2007)
I Think I Love My Wife
If you are a loyal Chris Rock fan, like myself, then I'm pretty sure you are gonna like this latest offering from the man himself. I Think I Love My Wife is an 'updated version' of Eric Rohmer's 1972 film Chloe in the Afternoon. All I have to say to the single men is, take a look at how hard it is to be a married man!
MovieFan reviewed Eagle vs Shark (2007)
Eagle vs Shark
Directed by Academy Award Nominee Taika Waititi, Eagle Vs. Shark is a 'nerdy' romantic comedy which provides a lot of laughs backed up by good acting from both Jemaine Clement and Loren Horsley. If you are a fan of the black comedy genre or similar movies to Napoleon Dynamite then this is definitely worth a watch. Looking forward to Taika Waititi's next project.
MovieFan reviewed War (2007)
War
Being a fan of Jason Statham, I was very excited about viewing this movie, which also stars Jet Li, but unfortunately I was a bit disappointed. War, or Rogue Assassin as it is called in New Zealand, lacked that kick ass and martial arts action you would normally see from Statham and Li.
MovieFan reviewed Severance (2006)
Severance
Just the thought of a director trying to make a movie mixing Horror and Comedy together really scares me! Unfortunately Severance is yet another failed attempt. I can't recall anything in the movie to recommend. Simply put, Severance is no Shaun Of The Dead. Director Christopher Smith describes the film as The Office meets Deliverance. Some parts will make you laugh, but by the end, if anything like my thoughts, you may wonder was it really worth the time?
MovieFan reviewed Delta Farce (2007)
Delta Farce
Being a huge fan of Larry The Cable Guy and Bill Engvall, this was one movie that I had been anxiously waiting to watch. Unfortunately my mind was too much in the Blue Collar Comedy mood to really enjoy Delta Farce. Only a few laughs here for my liking. Not highly recommended at all.
MovieFan reviewed Catacombs (2007)
Catacombs
Catacombs is a Horror/Thriller from the production team behind the Saw movies, Dead Silence and See No Evil, just to name a few. Some very good acting by Shannyn Sossamon and a solid performance from Alecia "P!nk" Moore made the movie watchable to the end. I found this film very predictable but was one to watch and see if the ending turned out to be what I thought it would be. Not highly recommended, but worth a watch.
MovieFan reviewed Good Luck Chuck (2007)
Good Luck Chuck
Despite all the negative reviews that a lot of movie critics have written about Good Luck Chuck, I found this movie to be both funny and enjoyable. Jessica Alba was very funny which surprised me and Dane Cook was great as usual. I did think that Dan Fogler's character was a little over acted which would be my only main criticism of the movie. Well written, acted and directed. Well worth a watch. A warning though: Not intended for kids :-)
MovieFan reviewed The Dead Girl (2006)
The Dead Girl
What may seem to be a slow drawn out movie going absolutely nowhere, The Dead Girl is actually a well written well acted movie deserving a little more credit than one may first think. Many viewers may find this film a little confusing at first, but once you get your head around the way writer/director Karen Moncrieff is telling the story, you will no doubt understand what's happening. Toni Collette is great as always and you'll notice Brittany Murphy playing a rather different role than you'd normally expect. Would like to ...
MovieFan reviewed Living Death (2006)
Living Death
If there is ever a really bad B-grade straight to dvd Horror movie, then Living Death most likely takes top honours. Not a great story accompanied by some very bad acting. However if you love a bit of gore, then you will love the last 5 minutes of the movie.
MovieFan reviewed Fracture (2007)
Fracture
If you are a fan of the psychological thriller genre, the Fracture is a definite must see. Sir Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling were brilliant along with good direction and a very well thought and written screenplay. Not in the same calibre as Silence Of The Lambs but very watchable and entertaining.
MovieFan reviewed Fido (2006)
Fido
You'll find that Fido is a different Zombie flick to all the others that are currently available. What starts out being a great concept for a movie, seems to fall flat by the very end. Billy Connolly was very good as Fido and the direction wasn't too bad either. If you are a fan of the zombie comedy genre then this film may appeal to you.
Simply put, Fido is no Shaun Of The Dead.
MovieFan reviewed Cherry Crush (2007)
Cherry Crush
Cherry Crush is nothing to get too excited about. After a rather slow and drawn out beginning, the movie never really goes anywhere to keep you interested in the story. Decent enough movie to pass the time if you need something to do.
MovieFan reviewed Whisper (2007)
Whisper
Whisper is a actually a lot better than your usual straight to dvd releases. What seems to be very similar to The Omen, this movie isn't as bad as what you may have been told. Very solid acting and a decent story. Couple of scenes may make you jump!
MovieFan reviewed Meet the Spartans (2008)
Meet the Spartans
Nothing to get yourself too excited about watching Meet The Spartans unfortunately. I can see most, if not all movie critics jumping up and down on this movie. There were a couple of times throughout the film that made me chuckle, but other than that was a complete waste of time.
However, if you are a fan of Scary Movie, Epic Movie, Date Movie etc, then you will enjoy this.
MovieFan reviewed No Country for Old Men (2007)
No Country for Old Men
I have absolutely no doubt that No Country For Old Men is by far one of the best movies of the year. If you have never seen a movie directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, then this is one that I recommend for first timers. Not your usual Coen Brother's storytelling, but arguably their best work yet. Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem turn in some outstanding performances. Good enough for Bardem to earn a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 80th Annual Academy Awards. Other nominations include Best Picture and ...
MovieFan reviewed The Bucket List (2007)
The Bucket List
Academy Award winners Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman star in this Drama/Comedy about two terminally ill men who head off on a road trip to complete a to-do list before they die. Best described as a 'feel-good' movie, The Bucket List seemed to disappoint in many areas of the movie. Nicholson and Freeman had great on screen chemistry, but I'm thinking that if it wasn't for the two Hollywood heavyweights, this could have been an absolute disaster.
MovieFan reviewed Mr. Brooks (2007)
Mr. Brooks
Kevin Costner is brilliant in this dark and disturbing psychological thriller. Good to finally see Costner in a role that he looks so comfortable portraying. One of the best performances of his career. Well written script, good direction and a good supporting cast.
MovieFan reviewed Eastern Promises (2007)
Eastern Promises
For the record, I have never been a fan of Viggo Mortensen, not until I saw his performance in A History of Violence. This time Viggo re teams with Director David Cronenberg in Eastern Promises. The film is well directed and with a cast that includes Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts, turns out to be a pretty good movie to watch. I have read a few reviews which say that Eastern Promises is one of the best films of the year. Although it is watchable, I thought it was far from ...
MovieFan reviewed American Gangster (2007)
American Gangster
I am a huge fan of true stories and American Gangster happens to be just that. Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe deliver strong performances along with great direction from Ridley Scott. I thought the movie being two and a half hours dragged on a bit too long, but American Gangster is a worthy watch for all you True Story/Crime Drama fans.
MovieFan reviewed The Astronaut Farmer (2007)
The Astronaut Farmer
The Astronaut Farmer is one of those 'feel good' family movies. Billy Bob Thornton was great as always. A decent storyline with not-so-bad direction from Michael Polish. Not the best family movie I've viewed but very watchable. Worth seeing a second time.
MovieFan reviewed Next (2007)
Next
I hadn't heard too much about Next which is probably the best way to view a film. Although watchable, I thought the movie struggled at times to keep us guessing as to what was going to happen next (pardon the pun). New Zealand Director Lee Tamahori told the story well and there are some pretty cool effects. Jessica Biel was great to watch (mmmm) and apart from the ending which threw me right off track, was not a bad effort, even with the Nicolas Cage casting :-)
MovieFan reviewed Shoot 'Em Up (2007)
Shoot 'Em Up
Just looking at the casting of Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti, who I believe are two of the finest actors around today, along with Monica Bellucci, Shoot 'Em Up has HIT written all over it.
I found this movie highly entertaining right from the opening scene till the very end. Audiences are sure to be taken on a non-stop action-packed joyride with a few laughs thrown in. I've said this before on the movie review of Beyond Borders: keep an eye on Clive Owen.

Death Sentence is by far one of the better revenge type movies out there. Kevin Bacon was brilliant as usual along with great directing from James Wan. Being a fan of Saw and Dead Silence, both directed by Wan, this was one of the must see movies for me and I wasn't at all disappointed. A few parts in the movie had that 'yeah right' factor, but Kevin Bacon was definitely the stand out performer which made the movie very watchable.
MovieFan reviewed I Am Legend (2007)
I Am Legend
I was quite disappointed by I Am Legend. I thought it was lacking a little something to keep me hooked on the story but unfortunately fell way short. Will Smith was great as expected. If you liked previous adaptations of this movie, The Last Man On Earth and The Omega Man, then go for it, you may be surprised, or you may not. Go figure.
