Nat reviewed Avatar (2009)

It was a brilliantly orchestrated cinematic experience (despite doubts)

I have to admit something before i start this review: i fell asleep during the first part of the film. The introduction of the humans going into space was by far too long, the script has absolutely no weight behind it (even taking into account its a blockbuster) and i did seem to think there was no redemption from the 30 minutes or so of what was just hellish and felt like it was written by a computer calculated to write your 2* sci fi thriller. chain smoking sigorney weaver waking ...

Nat reviewed The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Burton at his best.

Tim Burton before he got cringeworthy and predictable. Amazing songs, incredible imagination. Probably one of the best highlights of the musical genre for myself (although at heart i love most musicals). Beautiful cinematography (but isn't it always from Burton?). Even though i do think Burton is still clinging on to this masterpiece....if only he stopped when he was ahead ? tho Charlie & the Chocolate factory is well worth a watch.

Nat reviewed It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

"The great end of life is not knowledge but action"

This film was released shortly after the great depression - it wasn't a massive success (compared to Capra's other films) as viewers thought it was too miserable and too much like real life. Whilst It's become Capra's most well-known film. The film is often overly romanticised and the title is perceived emblematic of the plot -while recognising a deeply depressing narrative there is a happy ending of marriage and children. However, the title is satirical and the film is a Sylvia Plath esque narrative the entrapment of marriage, children & family ...

Nat reviewed Taken (2008)

Sorry for spoilers guys!

This movie promised to be a great compromise movie : the sentimentality of the father-daughter relationship (for the chick) and the action paced father saving daughter (for the bloke). It failed on both parts. The main character (Dad?) was completely unbelievable character (any of you familiar with Clint's brilliant Gran Torimo will recognise it being regurgitated - the all out hero failing to old age, America's changing landscape no longer feels it needs its A-typical heros, then later in the film you learn it really does) .

Nat reviewed Beauty and the Beast (1991)

get the special edition

If i was to watch this film for the first time as an adult i would probably come up with a whole heap of complaints. However, its buried in a little girls heart who still laughs at talking furniture's jokes. I know Pixar (among others) have evolved and provided us with a much more contemporary fairy story (but you just can't beat the old ones?) no its not that its the story of a girl being caught between a marriage that looks good on paper or going to love (and tame) ...

Nat reviewed Dog Soldiers (2002)

Tick-boxing horror films thats still original

A bit like Night Of The Living Dead....but more scary, and British, and with Warewolves, and soldiers, and a bit of comedy, and no college students! Result!

You can imagine what to expect from the film after the first scene, a guy and a girl in a tent in the woods at night....guess what happens? We then meet our characters, and off we go. Its hyper masculine in a really fun way, to the point ...
