Good, But I Wanted More
In Bennett Miller's film based on true events, Steve Carrell's John du Pont wants to train Olympic Wrestlers at his state of the art training facility in Pennsylvania. He first recruits Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) to be his stud. Eventually, Mark's popular brother, Dave (Mark Ruffalo) comes into the fold to coach and everything seems to be perfect in du Pont's mind. However, all is not what it seems.
I really expected Foxcatcher to knock me off my feet. However, I just couldn't help but feel that there was too much history and background that didn't make it into the movie. I read that the original cut of Foxcatcher was over 4 hours long. I would have been ok with that. Was du Pont an egomaniac, a narcissist and schizophrenic? He was all of that and then some. We get solid performances by the three men, but it just is led astray by missing pieces of the puzzle. It's a point that can't be overlooked and I wish that some edits had been to the benefit of the audience. I guess i'll have to see what the blu-ray brings.
