The monsters are very absurd and fascinating; somewhere between gross and compelling--it saved the releatively mediocre movie.

There are a lot of people who look at John Carpenter’s The Thing(1982) and don’t see what the big deal is with it or why it is has such a broad cult fanbase. Those people are idiots. Carpenter’s masterpiece is a must see study on how to build suspense and features some of the most advanced creature effects in the history of film. This 2011 prequel of that film (which was a remake of another great film, 1951’s The Thing From Another World) neither recaptures that suspense nor breaks any ground in special effects, opting for the CGI that is so prevalent today. Its impossible to not judge a prequel or sequel of a classic without comparing it to the original, but if you can take away some of that bias, then this Thing is not terrible. It is just another average monster movie, albeit one from a much higher pedigree.
