Fifty years of war between the Great Eastern Federation and Europa - now merged as Eurasia - have taken their toll on planet Earth. As a result of the use of biological, chemical and nuclear weapons, much of Earth has become uninhabitable and people have become prey to new diseases. Professor Azuma's "neo-cell" project, which is supposed to be the answer to mankind's hardships, becomes a nightmare come true when mutants spawned from the experiment escape and declare war on the human race. Azuma's son Tetsuya, who was killed during the previous war, is reborn into the cyborg Casshern as mankind's last hope against the new mutant threat. This live-action sci-fi movie based on a 1973 Japanese animé of the same name.

What would you do, if you were given a second chance?
Four years ago I fell asleep while watching this and now Casshern totally blew my mind. Some might know that I'm into everything related to Japan and movies aren't exception. I just love the language - could listen to it all day long!
Anyway... Casshern takes place in a world with an alternate history, a great war has torn the world a part leaving the Earth diseased and polluted from nuclear fallouts and factory deposits. Lifespan of the mankind has come to it's end, but the geneticist Dr. Azuma disagrees and reveals a cure: neo cells, which can regenerate human muscles and other organs. Like always, All he needs is funding for the rest of his research... Dr. Azuma is having a tough time with The government leaders acceptance, but everyone aren't so sceptic about his research - The military gives everything that Dr. Azuma needs. After an incident occurs in Dr. Azuma's lab, a race of regenerated humans known as the Shinzo Ningen are unleashed upon the world when they are immediately sent back to their grave - almost. The few survived Shinzo Ningen feels great hatred for the mankind and unleashes another great war against weak humans. Now only a warrior could save the Earth from annihilation and total destruction. The
opportunity falls upon a soldier named Tetsuya who's given a second chance...
Casshern is a sci-fi movie in it's perfect meaning. It's full of special effects - some of them very nice and amazing, others not so amazing and not very cool. On few scenes I felt like playing a japanese video game and had a few good laughs - nice scenes anyway. The storyline has a few basic japanese aspects like the movie has it's time before going forward on the storyline. Works for me, but don't know does it for everyone. Something I must say is that Casshern has totally amazing soundtrack. One of the best ones I've ever heard. The music reminded me a lot of probably the best RPG video game serie Final Fantasy. Again worked perfectly for me. I also liked the characters and the stories built behind them. Let's not forget the romance between Tetsuya and Luna or Dr. Azuma and his wife. The message Casshern carries within brings well out the humanity. Great movie and I happened to watch the uncut version with 141min runtime.
