Lee sets up one of the wildest stories to be put on the screen in recent times. BlackKKlansman tells the tale of Ron Stallworth, a real-life African-American Colorado Springs police officer who goes undercover to infiltrate the local Ku Klux Klan chapter. How does a Black guy infiltrate the KKK? Well, he plays the part on the phone and a different cop Flip Zimmerman is the undercover operative in person. Its one of the stories you just couldn't write if it hadn't really happened.
John David Washington and Adam Driver do a great job as the pair of cops, but Lee's angle to make the Klansmen come off as stereotypical redneck dumbasses is uneven. The film bounces between satirical and serious too much for it to really shine but it still packs enough punch to earn a watch.
