A mother and her 10-year old daughter are trapped in a forest. There is something in this forest. Something unlike anything they have heard before. Something that lurks in the darkness and it’s coming after them.

Review from the comment
The Monster examines two timelines between the same two characters. The first and very well done one is a look back at the relationship between an alcoholic mother with her young teenage daughter. The mother has gotten so bad that she is taking the daughter to stay with the girl's father for what sounds like the long term. The buildup to how they got to this point is told in flashbacks while the current timeframe is rolling. In these brief moments, The Monster is top shelf storytelling.
Let's jump to the other and main timeline of the film which follows the two on the road trip they are taking to get to the girl's dad. When they smash into an animal running across the road, they are forced to wait for a tow truck driver in the rain. They soon realize they are not alone in these woods and have to push past their rocky relationship to survive.
This part of the movie is pretty cliché and nothing we haven't seen before. But that bleak and honest look the tattered bond these two characters have keeps this one from completely sinking.
