Depp Delivers The Goods
I have to be honest. I'm a little tired of Johnny Depp. The roles he has taken lately are really not very interesting to me at all. Remember Mortdecai, The Lone Ranger and Transcendence? Honestly, the films sucked and he just seems to can't wait to make Pirates of the Caribbean 12. I can say for certain, that Black Mass is a film that gets him back in my good graces.
Depp plays James "Whitey" Bulger. A notorious gangster from the streets of Boston. He rules with an iron and I mean an iron fist. Depp is superb in Black Mass. He truly knocks it out of the park.
With a supporting cast that goes probably 20 deep on the IMDb page, it's amazing to me that this film didn't cost $120 million to make. Ok, I'm kidding. Well, kind of. When a movie has Depp, Joel Edgerton (Who is also awesome), Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon and David Harbor, the salaries had to have added up.
I'm not sure why the movie didn't get better reviews. Maybe there are some homage scenes to the great modern day gangster films (Goodfellas / Casino) I say this is good, gritty stuff and if Whitey Bulger was anything like he was in the film, I'm glad our paths never crossed.
