Review from the comment
As far as PG-13 horror movies go, Dark Skies can proudly know that it is one of the few decent ones in that classification. It is a very elite group, so small and irrelevant in size that even the best releases of its kind aren’t necessarily great or even very good when compared to movies in general. In Dark Skies, you have a very ho hum story of a family whose son begins acting strangely after even stranger things manifest in the house. However, one of the factors that makes things work here is the underlying story of a marriage on the rocks due to financial hardship. The problems are only intensified by the unworldly events that unflod almost nightly. It doesn’t sound like much, but as the wife and husband Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton do a good job of adding some substance and believability to an otherwise typical setting. Couple that with a few decent scare moments and an entertaining cameo from J.K. Simmons as an expert on what is troubling the family (to explain his role more would give away some of the plot), and you finish with an interesting recipe. It may not be good enough to serve as a main course everyone will love, but it at least has enough taste to serve as a side dish for a select audience.
