The Imposter is an intriguing look at the bizarre missing child case of Nicolas Barclay who disappeared in 1994 from San Antonio, Texas. While in no sense not tragic, the case was typical until three years later in which authorities in Spain had found someone who claimed to be the boy. This “boy” turned out to be 23 year old French con man Frederic Bourdin, a man nearly seven years older than the missing Barclay who did not resemble the child at all. But he was still able to convince Spanish authorities, the FBI, Texas police, and even Barclay’s own family that he was indeed Barclay. The Imposter tells this story in riveting detail, bringing to surface the ridiculousness of the entire ordeal. It also hints at a more sinister explanation at the family’s willingness to accept that Bourdin was Barclay, adding another level of intrigue to the already spectacular debacle. Viewers get a lot of this story from Bourdin’s point of view, and while he offers little reasoning to his actions, he is an entertaining story teller. It’s a curious look inside the mind of a master manipulator , even if he does not make that mind available to us in its entirety.
