True-crime writer Ellison Oswalt is in a slump; he hasn't had a best seller in more than 10 years and is becoming increasingly desperate for a hit. So, when he discovers the existence of a snuff film showing the deaths of a family, he vows to solve the mystery. He moves his own family into the victims' home and gets to work. However, when old film footage and other clues hint at the presence of a supernatural force, Ellison learns that living in the house may be fatal.

Sinister
Mostly Ethan Hawke walking around in a dark house with creepy background music; a bit scary and disturbing; but also a little absurd at times without the irony.

Sinister is the first movie to genuinely creep me out in quite some time. Ethan Hawke is a true crime novelist who is in desperate need of a bestseller. Unbeknownst to them, he moves his family into a home which was the scene of a terrible unsolved murder and is also the subject of his next novel. When he comes across some old home video footage in their new home, he slowly learns what caused the demise of the previous occupants of the house. Keeping him company for an hour and a half is a grueling ordeal and I mean that in a good way. For almost the film’s entirety, viewers are uncomfortable, locked in anticipation of the next grim discovery by Hawke. Sinister is deeply disturbing without being heavy on gore or torture porn, two things used too extremely in modern day horror.

Ethan Hawke plays a fading true crime author looking for one more big book. He moves his family into a home where the last occupants were brutally murdered. While there, he finds an 8mm film projector and some home movies. After viewing them, he realizes that his project may be tied into the work of a serial killer. Sinister is a great horror flick with more than enough chills and creep factor to keep even the most seasoned horror fan on his feet. It's a winner in every sense of the word and is worthy of multiple viewings. There is no question to me that Sinister is the best horror movie to come out in quite some time.
