Killer Joe is one of those neo-noir films that is just a little too off tilt for me to enjoy completely. It plays on dumb Southerner stereotypes a little too much and is just overall a little too strange. I was surprised at the tone of this film with Friedkin at the helm. It definitely didn't feel like the Friedkin pieces I have seen, with its comedic narrative undercutting the overall dark tone.
I feel like Killer Joe wants to be a Fargo for Texas, and it doesn't succeed at all in that regard. But it is enjoyable at times, albeit even if it leaves you feeling a little dirty after watching.

Chris has a major problem. He owes a lot of money to a heavy hitter and is going to end up dead unless he finds a way to pay off the debt. He comes up with a plan with his dad to have Joe Cooper, (Matthew McConaughey who is superb) a contract killer, who is also a detective to kill his mother so Chris's innocent sister can collect the life insurance policy. Can it all be so simple? They can only wish. Killer Joe will not be seen by a lot of people due to it's NC-17 rating. However, it needs to be seen, I feel it's one of the better films I have seen in 2012.
