Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, in 'the Bathtub', a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink’s tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe—for a time when he’s no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack—temperatures rise and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink’s health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother.

Young Hushpuppy and her father Wink are two residents of the Bathtub, a fantastical version of a bayou village. With Hushpuppy’s mom gone and her hot-tempered but well intentioned dad struggling to take care of the two of them, Hushpuppy is resigned to imagine a better world in which her mom could cure all the ailments of her tiny corner of the universe. When a vicious Hurricane Katrina like storm (or maybe it is Hurricane Katrina, jury is still out on that for me) approaches, Wink refuses to leave their home and buttons down the hatches with a few other hard headed locals. All the time we also learn that Wink is seriously ill and grasping at how his illness will affect his daughter’s future. I can see how critics could fall in love with Beasts of the Southern Wild. Quvenzhané Wallis, is outstanding as Hushpuppy and well deserved of her best actress nod. Its easy to root for an unlikely star in an equally unlikely film but there is just too much of a strange brew cooking here for me to fully enjoy the recipe. I struggled to understand the sub context of the film’s middle parts and how it all related to the big picture. Maybe I’m just too low brow of a guy to clutch what everyone else saw, but in the end I felt the experience was like listening to a song where the instrumentation is beautiful but the lyrics just don’t come together. Sounds great, but ultimately doesn’t make much sense.
