Review from the comment
Matt King (George Clooney) , a land mogul who holds the fate of prime untouched Hawaiian wilderness, must reconnect with his children after his wife is hurt badly in a boating accident. His elder daughter Alexandra (Shailene Woodley) is a hard partying mess and his younger Scottie (Amara King) is completely oblivious to the gravity of the situation. When King finds out his wife was having an affair and planning to leave him before the accident, he sets out to confront her lover. All the while his extended family is pushing him to get the deal done to sell off the land entrusted to them that will make them all mega rich. The Descendants deals with tragedy’s effect on the family unit but never once comes across too heavy handed or sentimental. It’s characters are authentic: Clooney at first is functional at best as a father but grows to understand both of his children and how to parent them. This could all be very sappy, but it is not. Its an interesting study of the ability for one family to rebuild after a vicious blow to their existence. My only complaints are that it drags a bit in places and seems to have a tiny bit of a pro environment stance that feels a bit out of place for the content of the film.
