Michael Shannon is truly one of the finest character actors to come along in awhile. He reminds me of Gary Oldman when he was starting out, taking on all kinds and sizes of roles which showcase his acting chops. Take Shelter spotlights those chops as Shannon plays a blue collar guy plagued with visions of some kind of catastrophic natural disaster. He soon starts to make preparations for what he feels is the coming apocalypse, much to the chagrin of his wife and friends. Shannon’s character comes from a family with a history of mental illness, and the director toys with the audience as to whether or not Shannon is suffering from delusions as well. It brings out a powerful performance from the underrated thespian whose resolve shifts from determined to self doubt to manic throughout the course of the film. The result is a captivating character study and well worth the watch.
