Kate and Martin escape from personal tragedy to an Island Retreat. Cut off from the outside world, their attempts to recover are shattered when a man is washed ashore, with news of airborne killer disease that is sweeping through Europe.

An English couple (played by Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton) having marital problems take off to an isolated island farmhouse for a getaway. It is soon obvious that it may take more than a vacation to fix their woes. But while the two go through their drama, they find a wounded man (Jamie Bell) washed ashore and bring him to the house to try and nurse him to health. When he comes to, he says that he is a soldier gone AWOL as there has been an outbreak of a deadly virus that has gone global. He goes on to explain that the couple’s only option is to seek refuge on the island and isolate themselves from the world. Over a short time, he becomes increasingly aggressive and soon starts treating the couple as his prisoners. The question here of course if whether or not Bell’s character is telling the truth or if he is insane. It’s an interesting enough premise and Bell plays his part well. But on the other end, Murphy and Newton’s characters are just not very likable. The lack of being able to relate to them draws down the film in a big way and even an intense, eyebrow raising final 15 minutes is not enough to save Retreat from a below average grade.
