Review from the comment
Behold the new era of horror films : the found footage genre. Blair Witch Project begat Cloverfeld which begat Paranormal Activity and so on and so on. For some reason these films appeal to me. I guess I am a sucker for the low tech vibe that relies on environment and setup to fill the viewer with dread. Grave Encounters is a clever entry into the increasingly crowded bin of these types of flicks. Its title is actually the name of a tv show in the movie whose crew has agreed to spend the night in an abandoned insane asylum in order to document its supposed haunting. TV shows like Ghost Hunters and Paranormal State are parodied to quite funny results in the first half but as it works its way into the second act, Grave Encounters turns less funny and starts pulling out the “scary” stuff. It works at times and doesn’t in others but there are far worse films to watch on Halloween night or whenever it is that you like to get your fear on.
