I’ll say it: Comedies are usually a no go for me. They are usually too high brow and I’m just not snooty enough to laugh along or too juvenile where too many poop jokes make me groan instead of laugh. There are exceptions of course. Crazy, Stupid Love falls into that slim area , striking the delicate balance of raunch and smarts to keep viewers of all types engrossed. Its not an original story: Steve Carell plays the hapless husband of Julianne Moore who announces on a dinner date that she wants a divorce. Before long, Carell is drowning his sorrows away at a local bar where ladies man Ryan Gosling decides to help Carell regain his manhood, so to speak. We’ve seen that story before, but there is a lot of new ground broke here. Besides the expertly crafted dialogue, the relationships between the characters is ultimately what makes this different. These are layered people who feel real and honest, even while flawed. It makes for good cinema.
