American remakes of foreign greatness rarely finish average. They are usually really good or really bad. 13 is an exception. It’s not a terrible movie but it’s not really any good either, failing to create the suspense of the Republic of Georgia’s original 13 Tzameti . A young man trying to save his sick mother steals a dead gangster’s identity in an effort to get a job that will net him some big cash. He ends up getting far more than he bargained for and must hope for a stroke of luck to end up home alive. There are a lot of people in this movie. Mickey Rourke, Michael Shannon, Jason Statham, Ray Winstone, Ben Gazzara and more all drop in, but there aren’t any outstanding performances from these greats or anyone else that can save this from being blah. Its very odd that the remake falls so short of the original as they are both shot by the same director, Géla Babluani. No doubt a bigger budget and a Hollywood studio breathing over you would be enough to make anyone slip a little.
