El Rey de la Montana fails on an epic level at being a quality thriller. It is filled with uninspired acting from the protagonist, behavior that is flat out unbelievable by the characters, and impossible moments that make viewers want to stop watching. To give a quick summary of the plot, a man meets a stunning yet mysterious woman who he ends up fooling around with in a service station bathroom. She ends up stealing his wallet, and he chases her by car through the remote woods nearby. Before he can catch up to her, his car is shot by an unseen assailant and while stopping to investigate just what hit his car, he is shot at again. Thus begins a boring ride through dulltown that neither inspires or evokes emotion on any level. There are two things however that keep this from being a one star film. While being virtually incompetent at conveying any amount of realism, director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego is quite decent at capturing a good looking shot. The cinematography here is definitely worth mentioning, especially since just about everything else is not. The other thing is the sauciness of Maria Valverde in the part of the con woman seductress. Its sad when a female lead’s looks are one of the only redeeming factors of your movie.
