In The Escapist, Brian Cox plays an aging con serving a life bid in a prison somewhere in the U.K. When he learns that his estranged daughter is terminally ill, he hatches up an escape plan with his circle of goons. The key to The Escapist is the chemistry between the group of prisoners. Prison is definitely a dangerous and scary place, but you can also find camaraderie sometimes amongst its various groups and The Escapist does a good job at documenting that. Damian Lewis plays against type as the psychopath who runs everything inside the walls and Joseph Fiennes does a good job as the muscle in Cox’s crew. Cleverly jumping back between the actual escape and the events that led up to it, the story wraps you up quickly and finishes superbly with an ending near impossible to see coming.
