Dear Zachary tells a story that you will not soon forget. When a filmmaker’s childhood friend is murdered by an estranged ex girlfriend, he sets out to document the life of his pal to pay homage. But once he learns that the murderer is pregnant with his dead friend’s child, the project turns into a completely different beast entirely. He sets the direction of the piece as a chronicle for the child to learn about his Dad’s life. Its poignant stuff, not only covering the loss felt by the victim’s close ones, but also digging into the dead father’s own struggles with low self esteem. But where the piece takes a gut wrenching turn is in the coverage of the murderer’s trial. The wheels of justice are stuck in park here and Dear Zachary is a scathing indictment of our legal system. Not to be missed.
