Joaquin Phoenix as the Prodigal Son
We Own the Night is a variation of the story of the prodigal son. There's the father, the favourite son (Wahlberg), and another son (Phoenix) who has chosen a path the rest of the family has a hard time accepting. Events in the story force the prodigal son to draw closer to his family, which in turn results in some friction between the brothers.
It is easy to identify oneself with the characters. Several common themes in an ordinary life - rivalry between siblings, a parent's struggle to accept a child as he is, suffering in a loved one's life, challenges of choosing to do what one knows is right - were present.
We Own the Night is a gloomy movie that comes with some unexpected drama. In my shelf, it's place is next to Eastern Promises and American Gangster.
