There are few movies that can genuinely scare you. There are more movies out there that can creep you out or make you uncomfortable. Alone With Her is of the latter party. It thrusts us headfirst into the life of a tech geek (Colin Hanks) as he embarks out on a random day. One thing is without question at the outset of the film: Hanks is a definite creep-o. We set off with him on his afternoon seeing everything from the point of a camera stashed in his duffle bag (the entire film is shot with hidden cameras). He films half naked women on the beach, up a girl’s skirt while getting a coffee, and after some more intrusive discretions eventually focuses on a woman playing with her dog at a park. Thus begins his infatuation with said woman (played by Ana Claudia Talancón) which progresses immediately into obsession. Hanks follows her everywhere, figuring out her habits, and quickly breaks into her apartment to throw up a spy camera set up that would rival any reality show. Once his video feed is live, he studies her, figures her out, and eventually inserts himself into her life with twisted hopes of some type of romance eventually blooming. Hanks isn’t always effective as the sociopath. Sure, there is an awkwardness to his character but at times his lack of social skills seems forced and fake. On the other end, Talancón is solid. Her character is not the average scream queen nor is this your usual scarefest. The actress is required to convey a complex range of emotions as we watch her progress from a bitter breakup to getting back on the dating scene to her eventual realization that there is more to Hanks than he is letting on. Alone With Her is a quick watch and well paced, clocking in at one hour, 18 minutes. While it doesn’t have any jump-out-of-the-dark moments that will keep you up at night, the whole premise of it all is discomforting indeed.
