Director Tarsem Singh knows a good shot when he sees one. Or dreams it. Or however he comes up with cinematography. The Cell, his first major motion picture, displays this in full force. Imagining a nightmarish subconscious of a serial killer played by Vincent D’Onofrio, Singh gives us a beautiful wasteland that is gorgeous and grim at the same time. Jennifer Lopez plays a psychiatrist who benefits from a secret research project in which one can enter another’s subconscious in order to help them ward out their demons. She is pushed by an FBI agent (Vince Vaughn) to use the technique to go into D’Onofrio’s twisted mindscape in order to help the agent find a missing girl. It’s a creative storyline that could benefit from some better dialogue but the picture overall is a fabulous debut for Singh.
