A small, seemingly innocuous plastic reel of film leads surveillance specialist Tom Welles down an increasingly dark and frightening path. As his work turns into obsession, he drifts farther and farther away from his wife, family and simple life as a small-town PI.

Review from the comment
Nicolas Cage is the king of playing both sides of the Hollywood spectrum. Leaving Las Vegas, Raising Arizona, a couple of great performances in great movies. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call, Windtalkers, not as much. 8 MM leans on the better side while falling a little short of being great. The setup is appealing: Cage is a gumshoe hired by a recent widow to find out if a video she found in her dead husband’s effects is real or not. The grainy film depicts a young girl being brutally murdered. Cage takes the case and along the way he will submerge himself in the depths of the porn industry and encounter colorful characters played by Joaquin Phoenix, James Gandolfini, and Peter Stormare. Overall, it’s a grim look into just how far some men will go to get their desires realized. It does suffer a little when it tries to establish a bond between Cage and the missing girl’s mother and also at its attempt to a twist ending. Still a good watch.
