I understand that purists can get bent out of shape when details are changed in adaptations of loved works. Having never read The Killing Joke, I didn't have that bias going in. That said, this feature is pretty sharp and enjoyable, finally giving the Batman universe that dark edge it deserves. Led by the vocal talents of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, The Killing Joke is the exclamation point after so many great iterations between these two talented actors. The animation is sharp as well, the grimmer shots taking inspiration from anime films.
My problem with The Killing Joke is the ending, and I will have to go to the source to see how that one ended. If the endings are the same, I'd say this version rushed through it. It just felt off and out of place and forced. Still though, this was a fun watch and I'll miss Hamill as the Joker.
The original Blair Witch Project is one of my favorite horror films. For someone who has a phobia of the forest, movies just don't get much scarier than that one.
This sequel doesn't do much to honor the classic besides basically telling the same story over again albeit with better cameras and effects. And that is what the problem is. The original Blair Witch was so ingenious both in its utilization of the found footage style and its marketing campaign, you just can't repeat that giving it the big budget treatment.
What you could do though is come up with a clever way to continue the story and sadly, that doesn't happen here. The scares are run of the mill as well and while not a terrible movie, this iteration is merely average.
I don't know why I pressed my woman so hard to watch this. It didn't get good reviews and I knew there was no way it could breathe in the same realm as the original. But I nevertheless hoped it might be somewhat entertaining. But alas, I was let down. This modern retelling of the classic haunted house movie draws no kind of creativity on its own. Even then, it chooses not to leech off the classic and instead bite from more modern and tired horror films. Definitely skip and watch something better.
